About Mike

Age: 27

Sport: Alpine Skiing

Home Turf: Whistler, B.C.

When not carrying the dreams of a nation, what do you do?

“Ski racing is my only career right now. It’s a full-time job.”

If you weren’t an Olympian, what would you be?

“From the first time I got into ski racing, I knew I wanted to race for Canada in the Olympics and on the World Cup circuit. All my energy went into that. I did have some thoughts of going into law, but who knows what opportunities would have been out there for me without skiing in my life?”

How long have you been skiing?

“I started skiing at two years old.”

What is your favourite Olympic moment?

“When Simon Whitfield won gold [in triathlon] in Sydney. Watching him battle through the pain of a tough race, then to win and show all his emotions on the podium during the national anthem was incredible. That’s the moment you live for as an athlete.”

Mike Janyk’s Picks

Best Dinner

Ka-Ze Sushi at the Westin in Whistler. Tokyo Tom always takes care of you.”

Best Drinks

Nita Lake Lodge is a quiet place to go for a drink with friends.”

Best Nightlife

Buffalo Bill’s is a great nightclub because it’s more laid-back, which is nice for us locals, and it goes off on the right nights. No attitudes, just a lot of fun.”

Best Deal

“For gear, go to Snowcovers. They have great product and the service is the best. If you ever need work on boots, skis or any equipment, they’re the place to go. They made the ski-boot footbeds that I race with, so they know what they’re doing.”
