A five-storey, 600,000 cubic feet industrial space is transformed for this walkthrough exhibit.
If you’ve forgotten to make plans for the May long weekend (May 19 to 22), we’ve got you covered. Book now for these activities that will have you relaxing dockside or raving beachside all weekend long.
For the weekend warrior
For those looking to get out of the city and into a Muskoka chair, book now at Taboo Muskoka, a dockside, boutique resort that features both a nine- and 18-hole golf course and onsite restaurant. Its prime location on Lake Muskoka also makes it the perfect place to get out on the water. Canoe, kayak and Jet Ski rentals are available right on the property. And in British Columbia, there’s the Prestige Lakeside Resort in Nelson that backs onto Kootenay Lake for plenty of water sport opportunities. The resort features two restaurants and a café and a spa, and it’s within walking distance of downtown Nelson.
For fireworks enthusiasts
No long weekend would be complete without a fireworks show. While just about every major Canadian city will light up the sky on Victoria Day, we recommend watching the spectacle over Niagara Falls (Friday, Sunday or Monday), which will feature backlighting on the falls themselves. Or, relax in a hot tub at Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood, Ont., and watch the sky above the hill come alive. It’s a long-weekend tradition, after all.
For the outdoorsy types
This is a great time to make use of those free 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Passes (for Canada 150). Campsites are open to visitors at national parks such as Banff National Park or Prince Albert National Park about three hours north of Saskatoon. Spend a day or two canoeing or hiking before setting up camp for the evening (not included with the pass.) If these campsites sell out, there’s no shame in seeking comforts indoors at a resort hotel such as the Fairmont Banff Springs or the Elk Ridge Resort in Waskesiu Lake, Saskatchewan.
For wine lovers
There are endless options for winery tours and tastings throughout the Niagara region but only Cattail Creek Estate Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake offers massages (Thursdays to Saturdays) in the barrel cellar of its winery (seriously.) To get a taste of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley wine region, hop on a Grape Escapes Nova Scotia Wine Tour, departing daily from Halifax, for tasting all over the region at wineries such as Luckett Vineyards.
For music lovers
Kick off festival season at Electric Elements Music Festival in Wasaga Beach, Ontario. A town of 20,000 people, its population has been known to triple on long weekends. Carnage and Knife Party headline the festival this year, which has become a staple for party-goers in southern Ontario. If country music is more your scene, check out Dean Brody with Aaron Pritchett in Fort McMurray, Alta., on Saturday, May 20, or American rockers NEEDTOBREATHE in Vancouver on Monday, May 22.
