Classic Attraction: Wandering the Halifax Waterfront
Dive into Maritime lore at one of the country’s most successful urban renewal projects. The Historic Properties, a collection of 17th- and 18th-century warehouse buildings and wharves, now houses boutique and specialty retailers, polished watering holes galore and the chance to fuel up on some of the best seafood in Halifax.
There’s also the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, a new farmers market by Pier 21 and, this month, the annual Buskerfest with 500 family-friendly and fringe performances from all over the planet.

You can rent everything or get lessons in Lawrencetown Beach, which is only 20 minutes from Halifax. There’s also Martinique Beach and more surf breaks and beautiful beaches all down the south shore. “I like puttering away my rare free days on foot. I’d start in Dartmouth with a double macchiato from Two If By Sea Café, then wander down to the ferry terminal and cruise into Halifax. I’d go to Taz Records, a classic vinyl and CD shop where I bought all my records and Zeppelin posters growing up. Then maybe [going to] the Halifax Folklore Centre, where they have beautiful instruments like guitars, mandolins, all sorts.
