A five-storey, 600,000 cubic feet industrial space is transformed for this walkthrough exhibit.
Fort McMurray’s airport has long been due for an expansion. Last year alone, 1.2 million people passed through its lone terminal, which was originally built to accommodate 250,000 travellers annually.
On June 9, the 15,000-square-foot New Terminal Building—five times the size of the old terminal—opened with upgrades and additional features including 16 food and beverage and retail outlets. Travellers can now hang out in a more comfortable lounge, dine at sit-down restaurants like Earls and Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria and shop Duty Free or Best Buy Express.
The $258-million-project also includes four aircraft bridges and eight parking stands to accommodate more daily flights. Those flights include new direct routes from Fort McMurray to Las Vegas, Kelowna and Vancouver and increased daily service to Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto.
More changes are in the works with plans for a full-service hotel with a pool, bar and meeting rooms set to open in 2016.
