Catriona Brown lives and works in Puerto Morelos, just south of Cancun. Here, she runs The Little Mexican Cooking School. Originally from Australia, Brown worked as a producer in television, film and theatre before heading to Mexico on holiday in 2002, where she discovered the village of Puerto Morelos and never left.
Where to Eat Breakfast
$2.60 “At the main downtown ADO bus station in Cancun, walk out and to the left you’ll see a little mobile stall called Tacos de Ado (open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Tacos have a choice of many regional fillings, including Chile Relleno. Turn around and see the Juice Man; get 500 ml of fresh orange juice to go with your two tacos.”
Find a Mid-Morning Snack
Free “Try La Isla Shopping Centre set on a tropical lagoon. It boasts 150 shops, with an aquarium and lots to see. Have a stroll around the waterside and look for shopping bargains. They also have good public conveniences where you can freshen up for free!” (Blvd. Kukulcan Km 12.5)
Head to the Locals’ Market for Lunch
$2.90 “The locals’ market downtown, Market 23, near Avenida Tulum, is a great people-watching place. Head straight into the centre and find a little restaurant called La Suegra (Local 10A, Market 23). Sit down and order the combo. You can have three empanadas, tostados or panuchos (corn tortillas with beans and meat and lettuce and sour cream) with the filling of your choice and a glass of delicious agua de Jamaica (a drink made from dried hibiscus flowers).”
Grab DInner and a Movie Cancun-style
$10 “Stroll back over to Avenida Tulum and catch the local bus south to Plaza Las Americas (6 Av. Tulum 260). Inside, you’ll find Cinepolis (998-884-0403), a place to catch a flick in English with Spanish subtitles for $5. Afterwards, head to the food court and find La Parilla, where two tacos al pastor (like a shawarma sandwich) and a drink cost just $2.65.”
