An Insider’s Guide to Victoria

Twenty years ago, Jaymie Humber traded the bustle of Vancouver for the laid-back vibe of Victoria and she hasn’t looked back. As the general manager of the Victoria Public Market, she oversees one of the city’s best-loved spots for local food and artisans. Here are some of her favourite places to visit around town. 

Go-to brunch spot

“The Ruby at Hotel Zed. I like the vibe, the owners and the vinyl that they play. My favourite dish is the Skinny Hash [sautéed kale, mushrooms and onions topped with two poached eggs and Parmesan].”

Favourite restaurant 

Padella Kitchen + Wine in Estevan Village. I went for dinner there and had a chef’s choice menu, so all these [dishes] kept coming out—I ate everything. It was so unbelievable.”

Outdoor festival 

Car Free YYJ. The festival was held for the first time last year, and I’m really excited for this year [on June 19]. It’s neat to get so many people downtown who normally aren’t there. I like the concerts, the entertainment, the kids’ activities and, of course, the food.”

Caffeine fix

“I love The Savoury Café on Oak Bay Avenue. I’m a tea drinker and I enjoy their chai lattes.” 

Rest and relaxation 

“[I go to] Boathouse Spa & Baths at Oak Bay Beach Hotel. The outdoor hot mineral pools are the most amazing part. Sometimes [on a clear day], you can see across to Mount Baker. It’s fabulous. I’ve even seen whales and dolphins go through there. The best is in the summer when there’s a sushi bar and you can lie at the pools.” 

For a stroll

“The breakwater at Ogden Point. My kids love it. They race, they want to take pictures and they [watch] the boats, planes and helicopters coming in. It’s an awesome spot.

Best Day Trip

“My kids love going out to Sidney and visiting the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. We’ll stop at Island View Beach along the way and go for lunch in Sidney at Maria’s Souvlaki Greek Restaurant or Toast Café.” 

Where to graze

“I get all my groceries at the market before I go home. My go-tos when I don’t want to cook are The French Oven Bakery for their pizza, savoury pie from Victoria Pie Co. and Sutra, for their bagged curries. If I’m going to cook, I grab steaks from Ravenstone Farm Artisan Meats and prawns from Cowichan Bay Seafood.”
