Shelley Boettcher is a Calgary-based writer and author of three books about wine. She has written for magazines and newspapers around the world, including the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. Before she was a writer, Shelley did stints as a cook, nanny, chambermaid and was the only woman on a construction crew.

Coolest place you’ve ever visited and why: Georgia—an incredibly spiritual country with ancient monasteries and a fascinating history. Terrific fresh food, interesting wines and some of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever met, anywhere.

Best travel advice: Be patient. Talk to locals. And don’t be afraid to accept the kindness of strangers.

Must-pack item: Lip balm with sunscreen in it. And ibuprofen.

Marv’s Classic Soda Shop

Walking into MARV’S Classic Soda Shop in Black Diamond, about 45 minutes southwest of Calgary, is a trip back in time, a place where no one’s in much of a hurry. People drink bottomless cups of coffee at the counter and swap stories with poodle skirt-clad waitresses.

And they talk to Marv—and everyone calls him Marv—about his newest old thing: Marvello Carbonated Ice Cream. Marv Garriott, you see, is the proprietor of the shop.
